Sounio modern travelers visited long before the start of excavations, among them Lord Byron in 1810, and excavations began in 1897 and continues today.
Local marble was used for the columns of the Temple, of the 34 surviving original columns only 15 today. Columns were cut 16 sides instead of 20, the lower surface exposed to wind and sea water.
On the east side of the Temple of Poseidon is an Ionic frieze (which is located above the columns) made of marble 13 Pariana. Today very eroded, it contains scenes of battle with belt Lapita and adventures of Theseus (who according to some legends was the son of Poseidon). Also on the east is described and the battle between Poseidon and domination Athens Attica (one of the provinces where the Greek and Athens).
