Meteora is located in the north-west of the Plain of Thessaly, near Kalambaka, river output pins Tessaliana plain beautiful and almost 300 m above the valley. As a physical phenomenon is unique worldwide. This formation has arisen due to a cone-shaped delta consists of river stones and mud flowing into the old lake Thessaly. After separation geological massif of Olympus and the Osse, found the lake outlet to the Aegean Sea through the valley of Tembi. Currently there are 24 monasteries, some are in a state of ruin (the Holy Spirit, St. Demetrius, St. Nicholas Padua and others), while others are well preserved, intact and functioning (Great Meteor Varlam Holy Trinity , Rusanou and others). Holy Meteora, for her Christian testimony, historical, architectural, artistic and geological generally is acknowledged as one that must be preserved and protected as a monument of humanity by UNESCO and by other international bodies.
On the set of the highest of the Meteora rocks, with an altitude of 613m, the monastery is the most representative of all the assembly, known as the Great Meteora, dedicated to the Transfiguration. The founder of this monastery was St. Athanasius meteorite came here from Mount Athos. He founded a small hermitage on this rock that turns into 1344 in a Lavra, the famous until today.
The weathered red crown of a giant cliffs, sits the lowest hanging monastery of Meteora Mount, called St. Nicholas Anapafsas.
Monastery of St. Stephen is the oldest monastic settlement on Mount Meteora, being founded in 1192 by Jeremiah hermit. Large rocks over a very lonely steep rises Holy Trinity Monastery. It was founded in 1438 Dometie hermit. The church was built in 1476 and the interior fresco dating from 1741.
Access to the monastery (and others) are doing rope ladder or mesh path with a drum and pulley wheel.
