Sea ice - Presentation and images
Mer de Glace (Sea of Ice) is a glacier located on the northern slopes of Mont Blanc, in the Alps. With 7 km long and 200 m adancine is one of the largest glaciers in France.
Originates at an altitude of 2400 m, which is powered by Geant Glacier, Glacier and Waterfall Lechaud Talfere north of Mount Cue Stick, and descends to an altitude of 1400 m.Mer de Glace, like all glaciers, is constantly renewed under the effect of two phenomena: accumulation, due to snowfall and ablation, essentially due to melting snow. Mer Glage "flows" constantly under the influence of its own weight, forming crevasses, ice columns and plates of water, depending on soil type.
Glacier speed, though imperceptible to the naked eye, is considerable - one inch per hour.Subglacial waters of the Mer de Glace are used seasonally by EDF for hydroelectric energy production. Tunnels mounted under glacier water collects at the bottom and channeled in a hydropower. This water is then discharged into the downstream river Arveyron.
Mer de Glace tourists can be accessed relatively easily through Montenvers track. Montenvers site located just upstream of the terminal of the glacier, offers a great view of it.
