Theatre of Dionysus

Venetian Castle
Venetian Castle, situated on the verdant hill at Bohali, about 3 km north of Zakynthos Town, was built in 1480 on the ruins of the ancient Acropolis island but shortly afterwards a part of it was destroyed by Turkish invaders. In this region has been built medieval capital of the island, with influences from Venetian architecture. It was destroyed by earthquakes and today you can see only ruins. Gate clearly shows the influence of the Venetians with the symbol "Lion of San Marco". Byzantine tower Ouranopolis
The tower was burned in 1821 and restored shortly after 1865, with the construction of annexes (a press for olive oil production, an oven, stables, a blacksmith shop and two buildings housing civilian workers), of which there are still only tower, blacksmith shop and house workers.
In 1922, as a solution to the problem of finding areas that refugees Caesar Propontis can be established definitively, the Greek government decided to confiscate monastic area around the tower Ouranopolis. Former carpet merchants and weavers lived in the abandoned monastery buildings to build the first house. Since 1922, the tower used before as housing for farm managers monks offered shelter for 10 years a family of writers, composed of an Australian and a Scotsman, arrived in the area shortly after the arrival of refugees from Caesar and Propontis .
Entry to the tower is through an outdoor courtyard and a massive wooden door reinforced with metal targets. A steep staircase leads to the upper floors, where two wooden balconies are hung in a precarious position of the outer walls. Here is a small chapel and Byzantine double-headed eagle carved in stone on the first floor of the building demonstrates age. The chapel was used by locals long before the church to be built.

Temple of Poseidon
Sounio modern travelers visited long before the start of excavations, among them Lord Byron in 1810, and excavations began in 1897 and continues today.
Local marble was used for the columns of the Temple, of the 34 surviving original columns only 15 today. Columns were cut 16 sides instead of 20, the lower surface exposed to wind and sea water.
On the east side of the Temple of Poseidon is an Ionic frieze (which is located above the columns) made of marble 13 Pariana. Today very eroded, it contains scenes of battle with belt Lapita and adventures of Theseus (who according to some legends was the son of Poseidon). Also on the east is described and the battle between Poseidon and domination Athens Attica (one of the provinces where the Greek and Athens).

Pontikonisi Island
This island, whose name in Greek means "Sun Island", is covered with Mediterranean vegetation abundance.
